In PRESSURE INDEPENDENT Model VAV-B-31/32 The room thermostat increases or decreases the amount of CFM that the room receives based upon the zone temperature. A CFM controller modulates the VAV box damper to maintain the desired CFM setting as set by the thermostat. Temperature is controlled indirectly from the amount of cool air, the box allows to enter the room. This means that no matter what the pressure is in the duct (as long as there is some minimum amount) the box damper will open and close to meet the CFM requirement.

 

This makes the VAV box independent of duct pressure. The pressure independent control options also monitor and respond to the velocity of the air flow, generally at the inlet of the unit.
